New Relic: What’s your professional background? How did you become an operations leader at GE Digital?
CK Rao: I have a strong technical background with an engineering bachelor’s degree in electronics and computer science. Over the past 21 years, I have advanced from technical roles—including developer, senior developer, manager, and senior manager of software development—into leadership roles, and also completed my executive MBA in IT operations. I took on my current position as senior director of IT operations at GE Digital in 2016.
New Relic: Can you tell us a little about the company’s path and technology stack, and how you use New Relic?
CK Rao: I have three teams at GE Digital: the Digital Operations Center (DOC), Operations Engagement (OEM), and GE Enterprise Monitoring Solutions (GEMS). The two primary goals for the GEMS team are, first, to detect incidents proactively and, second, to help resolve those issues reactively.
New Relic is helping us with both of these goals—we have been able to implement New Relic across most of our GE businesses.
New Relic: What do you plan to cover in your talk at FutureStack: New York?
CK Rao: I will talk about the partnership between GE and New Relic in general. In particular, I want to share some of the best practices and lessons learned from my teams as we implemented New Relic. I also plan to talk about the support that we’re getting from both the New Relic account team and the Premium Plus Services support team.
New Relic: FutureStack will have hundreds of technical practitioners and business leaders in the audience. What are the big takeaways you want them to walk away with from your talk?
CK Rao: In addition to the partnership with New Relic, it’s essential to have strong APM implementation, a SaaS infrastructure model, and alerting capabilities.
New Relic: What is GE looking to do next?
CK Rao: Our monitoring development team is working toward having a single pane of glass to support GE’s Digital Thread and Transformation.
New Relic: What are you personally most looking forward to at FutureStack: New York?
CK Rao: I want to learn more about New Relic’s product roadmap, and I also want to hear from other New Relic customers.
