SGK Transforms its Digital Operations Model with New Relic

sgk_image-89e0b2d7d810352b7487ce04fc32b512 In a world where competitors are multiplying by the minute, branding plays a critical role in helping a company stay ahead of the pack. And no one knows this better than SGK (formerly marketed as Schawk, Inc.), a leading global brand development, activation, and deployment company that works with Fortune 100 companies and some of the world’s most iconic brands. Schawk Digital Solutions (SDS) is a group within SDK that specializes in graphic design, packaging, and digital promotion, which it delivers primarily through its client-facing BLUE™ platform. BLUE is a cloud-based application that supports the creation, workflow, and management of consumer packaging and labeling design. More than 60 clients use the platform, and they all expect nothing less than top-notch performance.

So when the SDS team realized that its developers didn’t always have an easy way to diagnose problems within the app, they knew it was time for a change. And that change came in the form of New Relic. According to Kamila Bajaria, senior director of infrastructure systems at SDS:

“New Relic has had a transformational effect on how our team operates. We are now a metrics-driven, fact-based decision-making organization. We’ve moved away from trial-and-error methods of troubleshooting, and we rely on this software to eliminate 95% of potential causes right off the bat.”

Although Kamila attributes SDS’ success to a number of different New Relic features, a couple of them stand out:

    • Real User Monitoring (RUM): Helps the SDS team understand how BLUE performs differently in different parts of the world, which is important for a global company like SGK.
    • Transaction Traces: Collects data from SDS’ slowest individual HTTP requests, all the way down to the SQL.
    • New Relic Platform: Enables the SDS operations team to monitor its entire application environment from one centralized dashboard, combining all key metrics from other monitoring applications in a single pane of glass.

With these capabilities, SDS has been able to save significant amounts of time, money and resources, which in turn has enabled more time for the company to drive innovation. And the extra time for innovation has certainly paid off. Kamila and her team are making huge strides with their BLUE platform, which is why we’re thrilled to be having her as a guest speaker at New Relic’s upcoming FutureStack conference. If you’re attending, be sure to check out Kamila’s session on Thursday, October 24 at 11:55am. And if you still haven’t signed up for FutureStack, get to it now before it’s too late!
