At our FutureStack14 user and technology conference last October, our founder and CEO Lew Cirne announced Data Apps: a new feature for New Relic Insights designed to be a powerful way to consolidate, share, and connect multiple dashboards into a streamlined interface. In February, we launched Data Apps in beta, and yesterday, we announced the general availability of Data Apps to Insights customers (as well as new Browser instrumentation features).
Since the beta release, many of our beta users have told us that Data Apps has given them two primary benefits in leveraging New Relic Insights throughout their organization:
- Data Apps has allowed customers to create self-service analytics reports for non-technical employees to search, filter, and drill into their application data.
- Data Apps has let power users more easily collect and share relevant subsets of their dashboards in a nice packaged bundle with a single, shareable URL.

Self-service really helps
Data Apps is designed to give New Relic Insights customers the ability to create self-service analytics reports that even non-technical users can use to answer their own questions about performance, customers, feature usage, and whatever additional use cases they are employing—all based off of the custom data they are sending to Insights.
Instead of having to send out additional requests to see a drill-down on a particular metric, or to change the way in which a dashboard is filtered, business users can now click through a preset drill-down and modify their filters in real time via basic searches. And it’s designed to work on any attributes available in Insights.
Consolidate and share dashboards
Data Apps can also let customers more easily aggregate, curate, and share collections of relevant dashboards through their teams. This real-time view of key reports throughout the organization has already helped many of our beta users more effectively monitor their applications and drive visibility of key metrics. We believe this is especially helpful for power users who may have many dashboards. Data Apps is designed to let them easily package and bundle together relevant group of dashboards for a particular use case. Even better, they can more easily share these collections with a customizable URL that makes it easy to remember.

Using Data Apps in your business
Customers often ask me, “So what’s the use case for Data Apps?” My answer always begins, “What reports or analyses do you want to make visible to the broader team, or specifically to nontechnical teams?” More specifically, is your goal to give customer support a real-time view into user activity, errors, and issues that customers may be running into in your Web app? Or do you want to give managers an executive view of application performance? Perhaps you want anyone on the front-end team to be able to answer their own questions about which browser to prioritize for different Web apps?
I believe these questions form the real starting point for delivering value from Data Apps across your organization. The key is that you must have a need to show more information across your organization—and realize that New Relic provides features designed to give you unique views of that information based on the stream of application data already being generated by your software. When you add custom attributes for your application, customers, revenue, subscriptions, or features to that application data stream, you can really begin to create useful Data Apps that provide self-service reports for management and other teams in your business.
Five real-world examples
To give you an idea of what these abilities mean in the real world, here are five Data Apps use cases we have already seen implemented by our beta users:
- Providing the customer support team with a real-time view of application activity, letting team members search and drill down for more detailed information.
- Giving the sales team a product and feature engagement dashboard so they can have deep optics on which capabilities are driving value and what they should pitch next.
- Surfacing top-level performance metrics across a complex environment where managers can drill into per-application or per-region performance metrics.
- Creating a quick reporting tool for any developer to drill into API usage and performance. It covers any chosen API and subsets of actions taken with that API.
- Making a simple data app for the front-end team to review and analyze browser usage and version support, highlighting areas of poor performance and support requirements.
