Last month at FutureStack16 Tour: New York, we launched the beta version of a brand new monitoring product line designed for modern operations teams. New Relic Infrastructure combines configuration monitoring, real-time health metrics, a dynamic, tag-driven approach to alerting and dashboards, and native AWS EC2 functionality to give teams an unparalleled view of their modern infrastructure. But what exactly does “native EC2 functionality” mean, and how does that really help ops do its job?

To answer it, this blog post outlines how New Relic Infrastructure was built from the ground up to work with today’s cloud infrastructures, and how its native support for the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud helps teams increase that most personal and critical of metrics: their Mean Time Between Loss of Sleep (MTBLS). Built-in (native) support for AWS EC2 tags and metadata

There’s that word again, “native.” Which means I’m starting off this blog post by using a recursive definition … nice. Nevertheless, here “native” simply means that all the EC2 tags you already know and use are available in New Relic Infrastructure to make sure you’re monitoring everything you care about.

Slice and dice hosts by any AWS attributes

In New Relic Infrastructure, you can view your hosts through the lens of any AWS attribute, such as role, tier, Availability Zone (AZ), and data center, or even custom EC2 tags. We did this to make it easy to narrow down your view to focus on the hosts you care about. Infrastructure “speaks” AWS EC2, so you can ask it whatever you need to know.

Accurate view of hosts

Part of the value of AWS EC2 is the ability to automatically adjust the number of instances you have on an ongoing basis, thus helping you make sure you always have the right amount for the tasks at hand. But if your monitoring solution can’t keep up with the latest, most accurate list of instances, it won’t be very useful. New Relic Infrastructure automatically scrubs your list of EC2 instances to give you an accurate view of them in real time.

Dashboards and Alerts auto-scale

New Relic Infrastructure lets you build custom dashboards in New Relic Insights so you can view your data any way you like. It also allows you to build alerts for your infrastructure to help keep you on top of any developments that could impact the performance of your infrastructure. Both dashboards and alerts auto-scale with your EC2 inventory so you can make sure you’re always monitoring the entirety of your EC2 ecosystem.

Capacity planning

With EC2, it’s possible that someone in your organization, for any number of reasons, might spin up more EC2 instances than you really need. It’s also possible that some of your instances are being overused, which can degrade app performance. New Relic Infrastructure helps you optimize your AWS instances to make sure they aren’t being overtaxed or underutilized.
