Black Friday comes around only once a year, but its impact is such that many businesses spend the whole year preparing for it. But what if Black Friday-scale traffic spikes happened weekly for your company—how would you manage?

That’s the challenging reality faced by Lotto24, a German online lottery that sells 20 million tickets annually. With 156 draws each year—three every week—Lotto24 experiences huge spikes in traffic on a regular basis, especially when the jackpot rolls over.

According to Lotto24 CIO Kai Hannemann, who presented his talk “What If Every Friday Is Black Friday?” last month at FutureStack: Berlin, the final four hours before a rollover jackpot draw can get “totally crazy.” Specifically, load multiplies six to eight times as customers scramble to grab that all-important chance at instant riches.

To handle these rushes, the company went from outsourcing 100% of its IT to migrating everything in house. That included hiring 50 new developers and establishing three new private cloud data centers. The company also adopted a Kanban development approach (“Stop starting, start finishing”) and deployed New Relic to monitor website performance, often with exciting results: “The more you dig, the more you find,” Kai told the audience in Berlin.

To find out more about how Lotto24 helps its customers hit the jackpot week in and week out (not just once a year), watch Kai’s full presentation in the video below:
