The dramatic events of November 8, 2016, were a big deal for pretty much everyone. For the folks at Gannett, the “modern news event” that was the Presidential Election represented a major opportunity to deliver world-changing information to a huge, data-hungry audience. But, of course, the potential for high-visibility problems was equally massive. How did Gannett prepare and optimize for such a big news day?
Erik Bursch, VP of Platform as a Service at Gannett, and his colleague Franklin Hanson, senior manager of PaaS, explained that owning USA Today, as well as more than 100 different regional publications, gives the company enormous reach. It also exposes their sites to the “unplanned events” that breaking news brings. In other words, the company must always prepare for the unexpected—even when they know big news is on the way.
“In a complicated system,” Franklin explained, “full-stack load testing requires full-stack visibility.” And, of course, that’s where New Relic comes in.
