New Relic SFO and PDX Offices Battle it Out at Game Night

No one could ever say that New Relic employees aren’t down for a good time. From dodge ball tournaments, graffiti team-building workshops, to monthly themed happy hours, New Relic events are always high energy and a ton of fun. Sprinkle in a little competitive spirit, a Wii console, projector screen, and board games, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for: Game Night!

Last week we had our first ever inter-city video game match between two of our West Coast offices. The San Francisco Relics battled their colleagues in the Portland office at Mario Kart, and let’s just say the competition was fierce.

Game Night 1

While SFO has hosted a couple of board game nights, the Portland crew proved that they are really the gaming pros—their Mario Kart skills dominated the evening. As Portlander Chris McCraw explained, “Game Night is a huge thing here. We’re up to two a month in our Portland office, and they’re a lot of fun. They’re also a great recruiting opportunity. It gives us a chance to hang out with the promising people we interviewed and gives potential new hires an opportunity to check out our culture over a beer and pizza. Plus, it’s a great team-building facilitator.”

Not all gaming took place on the big screen, however. Equally popular were the games taking place in groups large and small. Most popular were the deck-building game Dominion, and the “Telephone”-style drawing game Telestrations, which had players in tears of laughter.

Game Night 2

For those of you looking to foster team building at your own office(s), Game Night is the perfect opportunity. “With our workforce growing at a fantastic pace, there are new faces in the office almost every week,” said Chris. “This is a really low-pressure way to meet new teammates and especially to get a sense of what’s happening in other parts of the company.”

Cooper Marcus of our Business Development team agrees, “Game Night at New Relic is a unique time to hang out with my colleagues in a casual, non-work setting. I get to make new friends, I get to play fun games, and I get to drink beer—three of my favorite things!”

Game Night 3

At New Relic, we’re always looking for opportunities to work together, learn from one another, and have a great time. Now with the advent of the Culture Club in the SFO office, the ties between the offices can expect to be further strengthened by team-building events like Game Night.

Look out PDX: We’re gaming up for a rematch. Winner plays Seattle.
