Such chaos struck one Saturday night—peak time in the world of sports betting—when the company’s in-house monitoring system failed to help Ian and his team anticipate a spell of ill-timed downtime.

That’s when he knew it was time for a change. “We almost felt like we were guarding the guards, and that kept us from focusing on our core business. It just wasn’t scalable at all.”

BetTech is built on open source software, and it was New Relic’s support for multiple languages and operating systems that caught Ian’s eye. After installing New Relic APM quickly and easily, he immediately knew that he’d made a good call.

“Within four hours, we had replaced all our server monitoring with New Relic,” he explains. “Straightaway we started getting meaningful data from the system.” Even better, some tweaked configurations were all it took to cover plugin services like Apache, Redis, MySQL, and Memcached—no new code required.

Tackling problems early and fast

The real-time visibility offered by New Relic means Ian and his colleagues can operate more efficiently. “We can isolate the root cause of issues faster and it doesn’t require the number of people we used to have involved,” he says. “We are proactive instead of reactive and can tackle problems before they affect our clients.”

And thanks to New Relic Synthetics, BetTech can monitor the development process, too. By tagging new releases with deployment markers and running synthetic transactions, the company’s developers can make sure load times stay where they should be with each new deployment.
