What do you get when you gather hundreds of nerds in the Pacific Northwest woods for a three-day Product and Engineering Conference? At New Relic, we got a whole lot of amazing software development presentations, hardware hackathons, masterful trivia exhibitions, and madcap soccer games. Oh, and some invaluable cross-department networking, too!

New Relic’s ninth annual product offsite commenced earlier this month to celebrate the innovation, people, process, and projects happening across the product and engineering organization here at New Relic. We took things across state lines this year as our annual conference gathered Relics from around the world at the picturesque Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington.

Talk nerdy to me

As always, the heart of the event were the numerous, heartfelt, and carefully prepared presentations from New Relic executives, developers, designers, site reliability engineers (SREs), and product managers—not to mention our hands-on coding founder and CEO Lew Cirne and a panel of New Relic customers. As you might imagine from such a diverse group, the topics ranged from deep technical dives into things like multi-tenancy load shedding for Kafka consumers to cultural investigations into identifying and interrupting gender biases in the office.

The product offsite is the one time of year Relics get the opportunity to share not only what they’re working on, but also the challenges they’re facing, the solutions they’re developing, their thoughts on the industry, and best practices for developing next-generation software. Maintaining an open dialogue has been a priority for New Relic as we continue to grow as a company, and learning from one another in a relaxed setting away from the office is a great way to promote that.

Our team strives to continually push the limits of what it means to be a world-class product organization, and the more than 60 sessions of all kinds —including poster sessions and ad-hoc “Just-in-Time” presentations— that took place at the offsite serve as both examples of that dedication and a testament to how well the process is working.

Nerds just want to have fun

Of course, it wasn’t all #nerdtalk. The conference also featured a slew of engaging group activities, from a lock-picking class to soccer games to a beautiful nature hike, and much more.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing some of the most interesting thoughts and presentations from the event as blog posts, so stay tuned. It’s a great way to get an inside view of how New Relic does things and meet some of our most interesting and creative engineers.
