Organizations successfully employing DevOps practices are routinely deploying code into production hundreds, or even thousands, of times per day. Most of these also manage to do so while providing world-class availability, reliability and security. In contrast, organizations that don’t embrace DevOps struggle to do releases more than every nine months. So where do companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Etsy and Twitter get their DevOps savvy?
For one they recognize the business value of a strong DevOps program: the opportunity cost of wasted IT spending and technical debt in the US amounts to about $2.6 trillion. Secondly, they’ve invested in getting DevOps down to a science.
Tripwire founder and eminent Portlander Gene Kim was at our Portland office this past Monday for a FutureTalk about why an increasing number of companies see the importance of DevOps, and how newcomers might go about employing it.
Gene is no stranger to DevOps, having penned three books, including “The Visible Ops Handbook” and “The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win.” He is a huge fan of IT operations, and how it can enable developers to maximize throughput of features from “code complete” to “in production,” without causing chaos and disruption to the IT environment. Gene has worked with some of the top Internet companies on improving deployment flow and increasing the rigor around IT operational processes.

Gene also points out that DevOps teams release deployments 30x more frequently and are twice more likely to succeed, and that “the days of reviewing and approving changes are coming to an end.”
Gene is also one of the authors of the upcoming “DevOps Cookbook,” a study of high performing organizations since 1999, now captured and codified, such that other organizations can replicate the extraordinary culture and outcomes, and thus enabling their organization to scale and win in the marketplace.
