Computer Architecture Has Hit a Power Wall

ben hindmanOne of the most anticipated and well-received talks at FutureStack13, our first-ever technology conference that took place in October, came from none other than Twitter’s systems engineer, Ben Hindman. The IPO darling of 2013 snagged Ben while he was a PhD student at Berkeley — it was there that he was in the midst of his Mesos project, which later became Apache Mesos, a platform for building and running resource-efficient distributed systems at scale. Now, that very platform runs on thousands of machines. So who better to talk on ‘An Operating System for the Data Center Computer’ than Ben. His talk set out to define the ‘future stack’ by taking a deep dive into the evolution and future of computing architecture. As Ben lays out in his presentation, “computer architecture has hit a power wall.” Today’s applications and data have outgrown single machines and whether organizations like it or not, engineers are building distributed systems. So the question remains: what would it take to build a multi-user, time-sharing operating system for the data center computer?
