Founded in 2009, RunSignUp is a software service that makes life easier for people involved in the running community. Racing directors, timers and running clubs can use the company’s race widget to enable runner registration on their site, without pushing runners off to some central repository.
RunSignUp is the brainchild of CEO and Founder Bob Bickel. A runner since his college days and deeply involved in the running community, Bob knew he could build a better way to provide online race registration and management. He assembled a small team of passionate runners and IT experts to create a cost effective, high performance race management system to provide a frictionless experience for everyone associated with managing or participating in a race.
As the company’s service and customer base grew, RunSignUp found it increasingly difficult to monitor application performance. Armed with only semi-manual scripts, RunSignUp could not determine when its system went down and for how long. The tools they used didn’t provide the clear visibility into end user response times that the company needed. No matter how hard the team worked, they were unable to stay ahead of issues or be as proactive as they wanted.
In addition, traffic spikes around race registrations presented unique challenges. Today’s biggest races have over 50,000 registrants and when registration opens, runners rush to sign up to ensure they get a slot. Although the company’s cloud-based solution is hosted on Amazon AWS giving them the ability to spin up large numbers of servers, RunSignUp still needed an automated performance management tool to provide real time visibility.
“Before New Relic, we had no visibility on the real management of our performance, no way of determining the average response time,” says Bob. “Now in three clicks, I go from top to bottom – from the management view to figuring out the details of my problem. It’s amazing and a huge productivity booster.”
With thousands of racers and runners in their future, the company relies on New Relic to provide real time visibility into the health of their application. This lets RunSignUp concentrate on offering race directors, timers and clubs an even broader set of services. Now they cannot only register runners, they can register them for specific start times, as team and more. Races can fundraise, sell pasta dinners and clothing. As Bob says, the list of features is “… more than you can shake a stick at.” New Relic helps the company ensure these features, and ones planned for the future, will perform well all the time.
Bob sums it up this way, “Since using New Relic, we’re up 100% of the time and we want to keep it that way.”
