It builds top ranking games for mobile devices and Facebook, including Forces of War, Crime Inc., Superheroes Alliance, and Mighty Monsters. The company has been profitable almost since its inception and has a strong commitment to social responsibility. It has contributed over $50,000 to various charities.

Uken currently has eight games in production. In total, the games have been downloaded more than 20 Million times and the company processes over 800 Million requests per month. With customers from around the world, Uken’s games have reached the top 25 in the Apple App Store and BlackBerry’s AppWorld.

At the core of all the company’s games is a strong online gaming community. The built-in forums, profile walls and chat features are loved by customers and create a deep, immersive game experience. Dark LegacyWith self-imposed performance goals, Uken originally monitored its apps with a few small Rails plugins and other basic tools. This meant that its development team was spending valuable time manually looking for bottlenecks. Uken soon realized it needed more help and that’s when the company found New Relic.

After an effortless installation, the company found the SaaS solution immediately useful. The Uken team pays special attention to application server response times and their Apdex score. If their Apdex drops, the team starts at the overview level and drills down to the game level to see what is going on. Today, everyone at the company uses the New Relic Dashboard since it aggregates all performance information into a single view. The Dashboard is displayed on TVs around the office.

New Relic has helped Uken tremendously. “Most of the time, we don’t even have to go into our own code or our own logs because New Relic has done the work for us,” said Uken Co-Founder Mark Lampert. “It has so much detail and points us to exactly what we need to look at. As our New Relic usage has increased, it has allowed us to eliminate other tools we were using.”

Uken deploys new content and game updates on a weekly basis. As the company continues to add games, features and customers, the SaaS solution helps it stay ahead of the curve. New Relic detects problems before Uken’s players see them and shows the team exactly how code updates affect their users . “Developers are much more aware of the impact of their changes,” summarized Mark. “New Relic makes it easy to spot the source of the problem, which, in turn takes us right to the developer. Developers take even more ownership of their code and how it performs. It’s good for our team, good for our gamers and good for our business!”
